James's Story
He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous bravery on 1 July 1916.
Today we remember Lance Sergeant James Anderson, 16th Battalion Highland Light Infantry, who was killed in action during a trench raid on 12 October 1916, aged 23. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous bravery on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He was also awarded the Russian Order of St George in recognition of his bravery that day. He joined the army in the early days of the war, reaching the rank of lance sergeant. In civilian life he had been a trainee mechanic at Lennox Mill. Lance Sergeant Anderson was killed before receiving his decorations, which were awarded posthumously at Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow, in June 1917. He is remembered with honour at the Loos Memorial.
