Private Thomas Duckworth was my uncle, the son of Mrs Sarah Ellan Duckworth of Radcliffe, Manchester. Thomas enlisted in Bury, Lancashire, on September 1914, and was sent for training to Codford, Wiltshire, where the 11th Battalion was formed and trained. He was sent to France in September 1915 were he served until his death on 20 August 1916. His battalion unit was moving into trenches at Thiepval when Germans shelled the communication trenches. Thomas was badly wounded and died before he could be treated at the nearest medical clearing station where he was declared dead on arrival.
