James's Story
We remember Sergeant James Anderson, 16th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Sergeant Anderson was killed in action during a trench raid on 12 Ocotber 1916, aged 23. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous bravery on July 1st 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He was also awarded the Russian Order of St George in recognition of his bravery that day. He joined the army in the early days of the War, reaching the rank of Lance Sergeant and, in civilian life, had been a trainee mechanic at Lennox Mill. Lance Sergeant Anderson was killed before receiving his decorations witch were awarded posthumously at Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow in June1917. He is remembered with honour at the Loos Memorial.
