John Alfred's Story

My grandad was deaf, possibly caused by the guns he worked with in the war, so communicating with him was never easy. As with many soldiers of WW1 he rarely spoke about his experience only ever telling me about two incidents. The first was of him riding the lead horses rushing guns to the front, there was a shell explosion and when he turned round the men, horses, and gun behind him were gone.

The second was of a very wet rainy night and some of his colleagues sheltered in a barn but my grandad decided to stay with the horses in his charge. The barn was shelled that night and but for those horses my grandad would not have lived to tell the tale.
