Henry / Harry's Story
My grandfather's cousin, Henry/Harry Mclinden, was born in Walton, Liverpool in 1892, one of about 13 children. His parents, Patrick, a railway worker, and Agnes, moved their family to Bolton in the early 1900s.
Henry joined the 17th Battalion Manchester Regiment, Reg. no. 8738. He took part in the Battle of the Somme and was killed in action near Arras on 23rd April 1917. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial.
According to an article in the Bolton Evening News, first published 9th Nov 2002, he was killed by a bullet through the heart, which skimmed the pages of a book by Pre-Raphaelite poet Christina Rossetti. The book was in his breast pocket and was later returned to his family in Bolton.
Henry's name appears on the War memorial at Manchester's Victoria Railway Station.
