Cyril's Story
Cyril was my grandfather. He was taken captive on 13th October 1918 after being shot in the face at Haspres in Northern France. Many of his pals died that day. He was taken to Gottingen and his life was saved by German surgeons. For the next few years he endured many operations to rebuild his face, at Queen's Hospital, Sidcup, where Sir Harold Gillies pioneered his techniques. Cyril never spoke of his suffering. I remember him as the kindest and bravest person I ever knew. We will always remember his name with honour and pride.
