Alfred Ramsden's Story
My grandfather Alfred Ramsden Sands joined the Yorkshire Regiment early in the first war. I believe he served as a sgt on the Somme front. He was shot and injured and I remember he had his fingers and thumb missing. He died in his 69th year but he had been crippled with mustard gas and all the remainder of his life following ww1 he had difficulty with his breathing.
He was a wonderful caring and loving grandfather. My memories visually of him are of a man who had deep set haunted eyes, probably the legacy of all the horrors he had experienced and seen.
