Harry's Story

We are proud to claim you as our own

Harry Foskett joined the Royal Navy in 1904 and his exemplary conduct eventually led to his posting as a stoker on the Royal Yacht, HMS Victoria and Albert. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he was transferred to HMS Agincourt and was in that ship as Leading Stoker at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. As a result of that experience, he suffered "early dementia" and was invalided out in March 1917. He died in 1920, age 34, leaving a widow and 5 small children. He is buried in Hollybrook Cemetery in Southampton. He is commemorated on the Southampton Cenotaph and the Winslow War Memorial in Bucks where he was born.
