John's Story
One of the lucky ones
My "Big" Granda was my Great Great Ganda and I have been told stories from my Dad, who knew him for a while before Big Granda died. He often told stories of what went on in the trenches. He was one of the lucky ones who survived the battle of the Somme and he told of how he tried to save some of his comrades and of the sorrow he felt to those that never made it. He was badly injured in one of the battles and fought with his Seniors to get back to the front and I am proud to say he succeeded. I feel priveledged to be his Grandaughter and I am proud to wear his medals. We are all here because of him and all the other brave men who put their lives at risk to save ours and that should never be forgotten.
