Henry (Harry)'s Story

A brave soldier killed in action

This is a man who is incidentally related to me. He was my grandmother's first husband, whom she married in 1915, but who was killed in 1916. Despite my tenuous connection, I feel a great sense of responsibility to remember him. He was, according to his officer, a remarkable and brave soldier - a rifleman with the BEF. I have his marriage certificate to my grandmother and the letter she received a year later notifying her of his death. His commanding officer visited my grandmother and told her of his death. He didn't soften his words - no clean bullet between the eye for Harry. He was killed by a flamethrower. I know nothing about him, or his family. But he is remembered.
