Frederick's Story

His great strength gave him the nickname, the Iron Duke

A man of strength and character who I knew as an old man, still working on his allotment on the day he died. He was in the artillery during WW1 and had a special affinity with the horses. His great strength gave him the nickname, the Iron Duke, amongst his pals, and he used to box as a hobby. When he came out of the war, aged 23, he returned to work for the LMS, where he was responsible for the shire horses. I only wish I'd had more time with him, but he died when I was six. His sensitive approach to the world, described by my late mother, has left a lasting impression on me.
