Herbert's Story
Herbert Scott was my godfather. I remember him as being a very lonely, quiet man who rarely smiled. When he joined up to fight in the war he left a career as a draughtsman. He never returned to it. He never married; he lived in one austere room which he rented in an old ladies house and he rarely spoke of his war experiences.
I inherited his few possessions and they nearly all relate to his war service or his childhood. There is almost nothing to represent his adult life. He was my mother's business partner; they ran a restaurant in Norwich and we seemed to be his adopted family.
I believe he never recovered from his wartime experiences. I have posted all his photos on flickr.com/photos/maryblathwayt and would be pleased to share them with anyone who is interested. I have no idea if any of his family exist as he lost contact with all of them except his sister who also died childless.
