Alexander's Story

Our great grandfather died of wounds at Ypres on 24 April 1915 two days after the first gas attacks. His battalion had an unusually long unbroken stretch of two and a half weeks in the trenches and was hard pressed and on the defensive throughout the period losing 29 other ranks and 190 wounded, of which he was one. At 33 years of age he left a widow and three young boys. Alexander came from Bridgeton in Glasgow and came from an army family. None of the existing family knew anything of this until I started tracing our family tree. Alexander is buried at Oosteverne Wood Cemetry in Belgium.
