William's Story
Joined the 'Preston Pals' in 1910 at the age of 19. Fought at Ypres initially. Seriously wounded at the Somme in 1916, where he lost most of his jaw. Spent the next two years in hospital. Could not take solids as a result, the only thing he could eat or drink for the first few months was champagne because of its restorative qualities! Awarded the Military Cross and Military Medal and was given them by King George VI at Buckingham Palace.
