Frederick John's Story
My grandfather joined the Connaught Rangers in 1900 and fought in the Boer War. He was in India at the time of the Delhi Durbar and at the start of the war was at the Galway Depot. He was a sergeant and trained troops at Kinsale in the early part of the war and, I think, saw service in Mesopotamia. He re-enlisted after the war and tragically died of appendicitis in Dublin in 1921 - a year before the Regiment he loved was disbanded.
