James Alfred's Story

James Alfred Herring - son of George and Mary Ann Herring of Eckington, Derbyshire.

Born 1889. One of two sons lost who were killed in action.

Private J.A.Herring 13743 York and Lancaster Regiment - 10th(Service)Battalion.

Enlisted Sheffield 1914. Garrisoned at Pontefract. Embarked September 1915. Fought campaigns in France and Flanders - Trio: Victory Medal, British Medal, 1915 Star

Died 28 April 1917 in the Battle of Chili Trench along with 180 colleagues.

Buried at Chili Trench Cemetery (Gavrelle) Grave C19
