Claud's Story

Claud Harry Stokes was awarded a DFC, as he landed the plane after his arm and leg had been shot off over Mauberge in France. His observer was taken away in one car by the germans and he was taken away in another. He then died on November 7th and is buried in Erquelinne Cemetery in Belgium. I only found his grave in 1997, having always been told by my Gran that he had never been found. I do not believe that my Mother knew where he was buried, she idolised him and was only 5years old when he went missing. We were in Brussels after the 2nd World War as refugeees from Germany, and I am sure Mum would have taken us to the grave had she known. He was awarded the DFC posthoumously and I have laid English flowers on his grave. His original gravestone was an aeroplane propeller.
