George's Story
George has left medals/letters to tell us his story. Whilst fighting in Loos, France he carried his chum Charley Thompson to safety after Charley had been shot in the legs - Charleys wife sent a letter of thanks to Georges wife telling us that Charley was now a cripple but alive and they had named their son George Loos Thompson in his honour. Poor George went on to be gassed though and never fully recovered. He spent alot of time in various hospitals until in 1921 he was admitted to hospital in Birkenhead (Cheshire then Merseyside now) and "fell" 30ft from the hospital window. The archives have the newspaper report into the incident and the poor chap broke his back and died later of his injuries. He is buried in Flaybrick Cemetary, Birkenhead in a war grave not far from his parents and sister. George Furbow served in Africa before serving in France in WW1.
