Francis Henry's Story
My special memory of my Grandad who lied about his age to fight in the first world war at the Battle of the Somme he was 16!
He was shot in the hand and knee as he went over the top, lay injured for days surrounded by his dead pals, until he was found, put on a donkey and taken to hospital where he was treated by Nurse Edith Cavell.
He never did cope with his experience and talked about it morning noon and night to me as a child, drawing me maps of where he was and drawing pictures of trench Mortars which he used to fire. The horror stayed with him for the rest of his tormented life...
I was privilaged to learn my History first hand from a lovely mild caring man.
Until the Poppies bloom again...
RIP Grandad xx
