Walter's Story
My Great Grandfather, Sidney, served in the Scots Guards and his older brother Alfred in the Grenadiers, neither saw active service. The Younger brothers, however were both in the trenches. Walter enlisted into the Coldstream Guards on the 9th September 1914 and his younger brother Thomas joined the Grenadier Guards 2 days later. Both saw action at Loos where, on 28th September 1915, Thomas received a gunshot wound to the leg. Thomas was back in trenches early in 1916, he survived the war. Walter was part of the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards, which was one of the Guards Battalions that attacked Les Boeuffs on September 15th 1916 and again on the 25th. During one of these battles Walter was wounded, he died in the 2/2 Casualty clearing station on the 28th September 1916 and is buried at Grove Town Cemetery near Albert.
