Henry's Story
Henry was my Great Grandmother's brother. Born in Bethnal Green, London, he initially enlisted into the Middlesex Regiment and was later transferred into the 18th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. They were part of the 35th Bantam Division.
On July 30th 1916 the 35th Division were holding the front line opposite the Village of Guillemont on the Somme. The 18th Lancashire Fusiliers were in reserve in support of the 30th Division attack on Guillemont. The village was captured but lost later in the day, the 18 Lancashire Fusiliers lost 53 missing including Henry. All but four have no known grave and are commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing. Henry's body was recovered in 1930 near Guillemont. He is Buried in Serre Road Number 2 Cemetery.
