Thomas Denton Shale was born on the 15th November 1872 Newburn Hall, Newburn Lemington Northumberland, son of Elizabeth Denton and Richard Shale. On leaving school he became a coal miner aged 18 in 1901 at the Delaval Colliery Benwell, he met and later married Mary Robson in 1898 and lived in Aline Street Benwell with their daughter Ada born in 1901.

Thomas joined the 1st/5th battalion (later the 50th Division) Northumberland Fusiliers Territorials Northumbrian Division which was formed in Walker in 1908 becoming Private T.D Shale service No 164. The battalion was moved to France on the 16th April 1915 from Southampton to Le Harve.

The battalion moved through France into Belgium where they took part in the 2nd phase of the battles of Ypres, during the battle of Bellewaerde Ridge 24th-25th May 1915 Thomas was badly wounded he died of his wounds on the 13th June 1915 at the field dressing station near Brandhoek and is buried at the Brandhoek Military Cemetrey Flanders Field.
