Septimus's Story
My great uncle was killed a long time before I born. I was told that his mother 'took to her bed' and died of a broken heart as a result of his death, his younger brother Robert was also fighting in France, he survived the war but died on his way home, I think he would have flu, but have not yet been able to find any more detail on this.
The report of Septimus's death in the local paper said, A Brampton Sergeants Gallantry - Killed in action in Flanders on 7th June 1917 age 29. He was a Quartermaster-Sergeant of D Company.' He went forward and was the first of his company to fall being killed by a shell just before they went over the top, the report continued, 'Septimus was beloved by all and the news of his heroic death made everyone of us feel as if we had lost a brother, he is a great loss to the Battalion'.
