My father was in the 1/22nd Bn 47th (London) Division (The Queen's) on the Somme from 1915. He was awarded the MM in 1918, but was very modest about it and did not think that what he had done was very special. His 19 year old commanding officer, 2nd Lieut. L. G. Maddox, MC and bar, was killed in his presence on 30/8/1918. He took the young man's effects to his parents, who had his silver cigarette case engraved in their son's memory and presented to him. This was and is a much treasured memento. A silent testimony to a brief but clearly meaningful relationship.
