William's Story

William Phillips was my great uncle. He was an apprentice pharmacist at Jones the chemist in Bridgend. When war broke out he joined the Medical Corps but later joined the Royal Field Artillery.

He died on April 27th 1917 after sustaining a fractured pelvis and femur when a shell exploded as he and a few others were repairing a gun-pit. I have in my possession letters to his sister (my grandmother) from his commanding officer telling her that he had been injured and then that he had died. Also a condolence letter from a fellow soldier.
