Harold's Story
Harold was a member of the Territorial Royal Engineers when war broke out. The 1/1st East Riding Field Company joined the 3rd Div in France in Sep 1915. Harold was gazetted for the Military Medal in Nov 1916. Earlier he had fought in Delville Wood, the Somme, on the 20th July but it is most likely he won his medal in August near Maltz Horn Farm. Harold's Brigadier wrote to him commenting: "Your CO has informed me that you distinguished yourself in the field." The probable date was the 19/20th August during the attack on Lonely Trench by the Gordon Highlanders and Royal Wesh Fusiliers. Overnight two trenches were dug linking the jump-off trenches to the newly captured ground. Harold survived the war.
