William Henry's Story

William inlisted at Cambridge into the 4th Batallion Bedfordshire Regiment, date unknown. He was stationed at Dovercourt and Felixstowe on home defence duties before sailing for France from Southampton in the SS Inventor on 25th July 1916. His unit became part of the 190th Brigade, 63rd Royal Naval Devision and he saw action at Colonne near Vimy Ridge, the Battle of Ancre, Arras, Ypres and the battle for the Canal du Nord where he was killed on the 27th September 1918 while taking prisoners back after taking part in the action to capture them, for which he was awarded the Military Medal.
