William's Story
William was "Killed in action" on the 23rd of July 1916 serving in the 1st Battalion, Queens Own Cameron Highlanders during the Somme offensive.
A letter to William's family from a comrade who went over the top with him describes; William advancing by his side, there was an explosion and he did not see William again.
After the War like many parents his grieving Father and Mother went over to France trying to locate his grave on several occasions.
In 1922 William's remains were found and identified by an inscription in his Bible, preserved in his Battle dress breast pocket.
He is buried in a marked grave in Theipval cemetery
"Remembered with Honour" on Thiepval Memorial.
