Donald's Story
My Great Grandfather Donald, joined the Royal Scots in 1915 when he was twenty. Donald signed up when he was eighteen but he wasn't accepted. Although Donald was from Bolton he joined the Royal Scots because his Father was from Scotland. When Donald was in France he was gassed but recovered and was well enough to stay in France. In the trenches all he had to eat was corned beef and plum jam. While he was in a forest near the Somme with some of his soldier friends they decided to make a cup of tea. When the tea was nearly ready a bomb went off. Donald's friends were killed but he was wounded, he lost a finger and a toe. So Donald was sent home after he was wounded in 1917.
