James Edward's Story

I was always told that James Edward, who was my great uncle, was my grandad's half brother and was underage when he joined up, so he'd run away. I only found out two years ago, that he was a regular in the Army and that he'd joined up before the war had started. There must have been an awful family row, as he changed his surname to his mum's former married name (Tosney) and completely obliterated any personal details in his pay book. He died of his wounds fighting in Gallipoli. I don't think the rift was healed before his death. His parents must have been devastated.
