Ernest's Story
Pte Ernest Jarvis joined up from his small village in Essex and a life working in a Department store in the county town Chelmsford. He joined an Irish regiment though I do not know how and am trying to find out. He served in the 1st Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers until the battle of Arras in April 1917 when he was wounded and whilst being carried to a field dressing station he fell off the wagon into the mud from which he was never recovered.
He has no grave and is commemorated on the MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING just outside ARRAS.
He was one of the thousands of ordinary men who went to war and never came home.His daughter Beryl is still alive living in Leicestershire though she never saw her father having been born after his death
Ernest was the oldest boy in a family of 9 and the only one old enough to fight in WW. His loss was a bitter blow to his mother Lucy and according to my grand mother the sister of Ernest , she never recovered from his death on the western front.
