William's Story

He was the life and soul of the company

William Kirkman drumer 20677 of The Royal Welch Fusiliers was my Grandfather. He enlisted January 1915 and was killed in action 1st september 1917. His grave is in Bard Cottage cemetary, Boesinghe, Nr Ypres, Belgium. I found the visit to his grave last year a very moving experience. My thoughts as to how my grandmother, left with 4 young children would have coped must have been very difficult. I have the letter my Grandmother recieved from his superior officer. In it he says how the whole company were saddened by his death and then went on to say he was a brave soldier who was the life and soul of the company. I am very proud of him.
