Anthony's Story

Died on 1 May 1918 at the Second Battle of The Somme.

This was my uncle Tony

his family's youngest boy

My father's 'little brother'

and a collective source of joy.

Like me a lad from Salford

who's life had just begun.

Like countless of his countrymen

sent to Flanders with a gun.

My father was already there

and I often heard him tell

of the horror held within the news

'Their Kid' was joining him in hell.

I can't remember if they ever met

On the battlefields of France

Just two brothers amongst millions

There was very little chance

My father made it home again

Uncle Tony died out there

he became a name upon a wall

and a memory we all share.

My elder brother is his namesake

As the first boy who came along

Me, a younger son, like Uncle Tony

I've got the memory of his song
