George's Story
George Clark (23750) 52nd Battery,15th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, enlisted on 19th August 1914. At that time, he was engaged to my great aunt, Jean Messer. He was an orphan and he had no contact with any other living relatives. He was looking forward to being part of a family with Jean once hostilities had ceased. He regularly sent postcards home from the Front to his members of Jean's family. George was killed in action on 9th August 1916 and is buried in Quarry Cemetery, Montauban on the Somme. He was posthumously awarded the 1914 Star with clasp, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, sent to my heart-broken great aunt as his next-of-kin, who only married late in life 20 years after George's death.
