Patrick's Story
Patrick, enlisted as a gunner 30.11.11 & discharged 29.1.14. He was recalled for duty & mobilized at the outbreak of WW1, 7.8.14. He joined the expeditionry force; 40 Bty, 31 Bde, arrived in Boulogne 17.8.14. The R.F.A. then marched to the western front to relieve the French & engage the enemy. Patrick was sent home to recover from his wounds, 16.1.15 - 17.4.15. He arrived in Ypres 17.4.15 - 17.11.15 to join 31 Bde, 28 Div, 100 Bty. He then moved to Salonica with the Brigade, returning home 3.9.18 & discharged 11.3.19.
Of course, this does not tell the full story, like all of those who served in WW1, my Grandfather never told his experience to his wife, children or grandchildren; of his walk into hell! he could not find the words or did he want to! That impossible task was left to those few poets who saw it & for us to read their painful words & utter in horror.
