Charles's Story

Charles Charland born 1886, Dublin Ireland, died 1939 in Leigh Lancashire.

A Special Tribute to my great uncle

I have never met my great uncle, but since doing my family tree, I now find a war hero in my family.

Joined the Royal Engineers in 1914, went missing in action in 1915, found with a skull injury, and when fit returned to the front line. Even though he was seen as fit, he still had a piece of metal lodged in his skull, and although he died in 1939, it was because that piece of metal moved, which in turn killed him. When he returned home after the war, his life was never the same, I am not only proud of all our service men and women who serve our country, but honour those who have given their lives, to give average people like me the life we have today.

I feel honoured and proud to be able to add to this wall with my great uncle's name, and may all our service men and women, never be forgotten.
