William James's Story

A grandfather who died when I was just a baby. Only recently looking through family history did I realise that he joined the war effort in France when he was 50, but fortunately did return to have twins one of which was my mother. He never, like many, ever spoke about what he had seen during the war. He told his sons in 1939 they had a duty to fight for their country, they almost all survived, one came home and died of leukaemia - he was one of the desert rats. My grandfather died in his late 80's surrounded by his loving family. He never once felt, what he and his sons did by fighting for their country, was something to complain about, just to be proud that they had fought for freedom.
