Joseph Herbert's Story

Joseph was conscripted in 1916 having been a deputy manager for The Bowring Petroleum Oil Company in Sutton in Ashfield. He joined the Sherwood Forresters but on February 12th 1917 was transfered to the Machine Gun Corps. On 31st August he went overseas to serve in France and was wounded sometime between the 12th -13th April 1918 in the thigh at the battle for Kemmel Ridge. He was evacuated back to the UK and hospitalised at the Edinburgh War Hospital where he died of septicaemia on 2nd May 1918. His wife Florrie and brother Walter were present at his bedside.

He is buried in New Basford Cemetery Nottingham, his grave having a military headstone.
