Reuben William's Story
Reuben Crisp joined the Suffolk Regiment on May 4 1915. He was one of the 60,000 casualties of the battle of the Somme.
He had a gunshot wound to his jaw, and had served for one year and 361 days.
Wounded and left for dead, a slight movement of his arm had drawn the attention of medical orderlies.
How long this gentle man had lain there I don't know, but even now thinking of the words from the orderly reduces me to tears. "Alright mate, we'll take you".
He left the army as no longer fit for service on April 28, 1917. After recuperation in Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton, where he met my mother, he spent 47 years with Southern Railways. He died in 1968.
