Charles Henry Sampson's Story
Charles Wilks was one of my Gran's four brothers, three of whom were fighting in the Great war. We have a letter sent from him dated 17th October 1917 from Ypres two days later he was dead. He was driving a Red Cross ambulance cerrying casualties from Passchendale to the field hospital, it was blown up killing all occupants. Every year we would accompany my Gran to Crowle village church for the remembrance service and the vicar would read out the roll call of names of the fallen as the wreath was laid on the stone memorial.
I would very much like to travel to Ypres to pay my respects at the Menin gate, hopefully I can organise a visit next year.
