Herbert, Bert, was a fabulous grandfather to my brother and I and would tell us tales of his service with the 11th battalion Kings Liverpool regiment. He never talked of the horror he witnessed but made it sound like a boys own adventure. His typical Liverpool sense of humour came through. He once told us that during rifle practice he was asked what a Fine Sight was. His answer was "Two dinners on one plate"! Just before he died, in his 80's, he wrote his memoirs which I am now researching. As a member of the Pioneer battalion for the 14th Division he saw action at Ypres, Delville Wood and Arras. In early 1918 the battalion was scattered all over the place and he was transferred to the 1st battalion Kings Liverpool and was wounded in the shoulder and head and sent home. A real gentleman a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. All memorys of him are special.
