Soldier Record

My grandfather was 40 when he was sent to France in 1917, having previously fought in the Boer War and being in the RFA Territorial Brigade. From 1915 until the end of the war he wrote regularly to his two small sons and though he tried to keep the letters light and cheerful some parts are very painful. His last letter before he was sent to France concluded "I know its difficult and sometimes you may fail but always try to play the game. I think you will understand what I mean and always remember it. Goodbye dear boys for the present and God bless you. Your loving Daddy". He fought at Passchendaele and Ypres and was awarded the Military Cross and Croix de Guerre for his actions with the 5th Army on 21 March 1918.
