James's Story

Prisoner of war from 30/11/1917 to 17/11/1918

My grandad, already an old man when I was born. Quiet and unassuming. Loved his garden, which took quite a battering during family gatherings with 17 grandchildren running around, and his family. Quite a shock to learn he was a prisoner of war, even my mother didn't know.

Not a memory but new things I have learned about my grandad. He was a Sapper with 178th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers. He was a gravedigger in his civilian life. When taken prisoner he was in a camp at Dulmen, Westphalia.
