Joseph's Story
Joseph Cowen was a man in the prime of youth killed in action during military service in Mesopotamia.
Joseph Cowen, the second son of William and Nancy, was born in the Georgian town of Whitehaven, Cumbria. The sixth child of eleven he was born in November 1893. He was a bright lad, winning a scholarship to Whitehaven County Secondary School. He entered Leeds Training College. He was reported to have excelled in French. On qualifying as a teacher he took a post at Crosthwaite Memorial School prior to enlisting in the Seaforth Highlanders as a Private in 1915. Joseph's brief military career took him initially to fight in France and then on to fight and make the ultimate sacrifice in the Battle of Sheikh Sa'id on the 7th January 1916, he was 22.
He will be remembered.
