Wilfred's Story
Wilf was my dear Dad. He didn't talk much about his experiences in the trenches. I think it was too horrible to recall. One of the few stories he told me was of his encounter with the Prince of Wales (later to become the Duke of Windsor). He was in his dugout one day and an officer appeared and simply spoke to him and shook his hand - no pomp, no fuss. Dad was very proud of this unexpected meeting. Another sadder tale was how he and 3 friends were together in the trenches together when a shell hit and killed the others but Dad didn't suffer a scratch. He spent time in Italy as well as France. Very many years later my husband and I visited Trieste where Dad was once stationed.
