Matthew's Story
In memory of my great-great uncle Matthew Lomas. Wounded at the Somme, in October 1916, possibly in the Battle of Le Transloy. Died of wounds sustained. 15th October 1916. Buried at Contay British Cemetery, Contay, France. Grave ref III.C.14
Information from Commonwealth Wargraves Commission roll of honour. Born Staleybridge Lancashire December 1887. Left a widow Laura Lomas, (nee Maude?) Married Parish Church Moston Manchester 1/8/1914. Lived New Street Moston Manchester. Signed up 2/9/1914 Manchester. Trade, warehouseman. 5ft 6" Dark brown eyes, black hair. Information from WW1 service record.
Rank Private: On first enlisting Matthew joined the 16th (Service) Battalion (1st City) Manchester Regiment. No.6773. The "Manchester Pals". Wounded in May 1916 he was sent back to England to recover. Returned to France August 1916 transfered to the Loyals 8th Battalion.
