Albert's Story
I remember my grandfather as a quiet, frail, subdued man.
I have a story that was told to me when I was very much younger.
My grandfather was severely wounded on the 17th October 1917 during the 3rd battle of Ypres. He was badly mauled by shrapnel and also lost his right eye. He later spent nine months in hopspital.
At the time he was not allowed to say where this had happened but in a letter to his parents said that it was at a place which carried the same name as his favourite tobacco.
Last year, I decided to visit the Ypres area and at a place called St Julian, I found a Dressing Sation Cemetery, (his favourite tobacco being-----St Julian).
In the cemetery I found the headstone of a fallen soldier of my grandfather's regiment, who had died on the same day as my relative had been wounded.
Could this have been the same incident? I will never know as my grandfather was very reluctant to talk about the war years
