Fred's Story
Before the war Fred was a miner and was an active and talented amateur sportsman. He was a member of Hexham Amateur Rowing Club and of the very successful Tynedale Rugby team: "As half back he was excelled by few and the services he rendered the Tyneside Football club were invaluable" (Obituary - Hexham Courant 21.10.1916). He originally joined the Northumberland Fusiliers but was with the 149th Machine Gun Corps when he was killed on 15th September 1915. His friend Dan Clarence wrote to his widow: "I hope it may be some consolation that he died splendidly in the great battle of liberty using his best energies to encourage his men to further efforts. May God bless you and the little one in your terrible bereavement".
