Some day I would like to go and see my grandfatherÂ’s grave and lay some flowers on it, just to say thank you.

Corporal Hugh Hay was my grandfather. He lived in Ayr, was married and had two young sons - my father Tommy and my uncle Hugh. He was a signwriter and volunteered at the start of World War I. He was sent to Stirling and the only photo I have of him is with his wife and two sons taken just before he joined up. My dad was only nine months old at the start of the war and just over two years old when his father was killed - he had no memory of him. I always felt sad at the thought of my grandfather going off to war and dying in Egypt - he is buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery. My grandmother was never able to visit his grave nor was either of his sons. Some day I would like to go and see my grandfatherÂ’s grave and lay some flowers on it, just to say thank you for my life and freedom and that he was never forgotten.
