Walter's Story
He was in the Mediterranean on the way to fight in Gallipoli when he was declared unfit and sent instead to India; this may well have saved his life.
Walter was my grandfather and died just before I was born. He enlisted in the Gloucesters as this was the local regiment for people in Bristol. My mother said he was in the Mediterranean on the way to fight in Gallipoli when he was declared unfit and sent instead to India; this may well have saved his life. I have a snuff box of his that was made out of the bottom of a small shell case in the shape of soldier's cap with the Gloucesters' badge.
